Research has shown that we as humans have a tendency to perceive children as more attractive.
With their high and protruding foreheads, large eyes, somewhat chubby cheeks, and small noses, many studies have revealed that pictures of infants are preferred over pictures of adults. If an adult is proclaimed to have a "baby-ish" face, more often than not, it is meant as a compliment. We are inclined to revere people with these infantile physical traits, like Miranda Kerr, one of the most renowned models today ( and I think one of the prettiest ). She is loved for her dimples and full cheeks, both qualities we normally associate with children.
These two photography series are done by Jason Lee ( with his two daughters ) and Mr:Mac ( with his son and daughter ), which can be found here and here, respectively. You may have already seen Lee's two adorable girls, as his pictures have been featured on sites like My Modern Met and the Huffington Post. Mr:Mac on Flickr has not received as much exposure, but his works are just as amazing.
Both fathers captured the joy and innocence of their children, framed in a more humorous light. While the pictures are not necessarily portraits or candids, I believe they represent the spirit of childhood the most accurately.
When I think back on my younger days, I feel that slight tug of a smile on my face. I cherish those memories of unbridled joy and innocence, when the only thing I worried about was if my stuffed rooster, my most beloved stuffed animal, was doing alright by himself.
some said he looks slightly creepy...but i refuse to believe it! ^^
ps.
To everyone who has seen The Dark Knight Rises, check out this "Batman Maybe" video, where "Joseph Gordon-Levitt" sings us a "Call Me Maybe" parody. :)
Fave line: "You tried to look like / you were happy / but you were Batman / and really angry." :D
I loveeeee Jason Lee's photographs of his two daughters!!! I wish my dad was talented enough to capture my sister and my childhood exactly like that. Thanks for sharing because whenever I look at his photos, it always makes me smile. =)
I have seen Jason Lee's photos and follow his blog. I love all his photography. Thanks for introducing me to Mr:Mac. His photography is equally amazing :)
I've been following Jason Lee's work for quite a while now, but Mr:Mac is new to me :o I love conceptual photos like these. They bring such dimension to easily overlooked topics. Ah, I miss my childhood now, but in all honesty, I still feel like a child haha. I still have to go to sleep with my teddy, that's for sure *Don't judge me please* :P
Hi sweety, aw this photos are just incredible, they really brightened up my day, thanks so much for sharing them. I am also really fond of kids, they are adorable. Your stuffed bird is the cutest! So colorful and fun, I still have some of my old fuzzy friends somewhere, lol. Haha, great parody!
Hi Xixia! :) I love children as well and I love Jason Lee's photos of his daughters, they're always so interesting and creative. Watching my niece grow is just amazing to me and children really do say the darnest things! And although they can push your buttons, at the end of the day they're all just so sweet and loving, hehe.
Definitely following you after seeing this post. Keep in touch, hun.
I love Jason Lee's pictures - they make me giggle. I haven't seen the Batman movie yet but am down for any parody of Call Me Maybe. Best song of the summer?
Amazing photo inspirations! Oh, and by the way, thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! I would love for us to follow each other. Let me know if you followed me already so I can follow you back right away! Let's keep in touch!
i'm sending that mario image to my husband! i loved being a kid, i still am a kid in some ways, and i don't care. i can't wait to have kids and photograph them - this post is super aspirational to me. and we really wanna dress our kids up in mario outfits - my baby will be dressed as toad - wouldn't that be SO cute?
I think we all are, at least parts of us. We can't throw away our kiddie tendencies that easily, it's like that's why most of us still have toys or trinkets from way back. We just can't let that part of us go. And hahah, I think that's one thing I'm most excited about when I have a kid - I get to dress them up! :) xx
Interesting post! And yes I do agree, there are just certain traits that make kids look more appealing than others :) Hope you will join twitter, it's a great way to interact with others.
I have seen these photos before but they are just too cute. I can't wait to have little ones :] I think your rooster is cute. I had a blanket I toted around everywhere.
Same here. Too excited to think about having kiddies! :D and hahah, thank you! He deserves the love. I never had a blanket, but that sounds so cute. ^^ xx
Children are so awesome! I love to see a child's expression when they learn something new, receive a new toy, read a book or wear a cute outfit. It's this innocence from prejudice, judging, etc. that often adults are plagued with. Great post! http://www.averysweetblog.com/
What an interesting thought - although I will admit that yes, I love photos of children because there is that cute-ness factor. The way their eyes just light up when they are happy or see something they love.. well, it's magical!
oh these photos are so cute! I love kids too, because of how innocent and simple they are. it's interesting that there's actually scientific proof of how we are naturally attracted to children. I can definitely see the evidence in someone like Miranda Kerr, but then again I know lots of people who don't like her face precisely because of that young and cute look!
I've seen the photographs by Jason Lee before and I found them a fascinating way to capture memories of his children aside from the traditional Christmas photographs and school event fare. (And as adorable has they are, I also feel this impending dread of entering adulthood– but the spirit of children will always live on, yeah? Haha.) Thanks for sharing the other set of photographs! xx
Hahah yes, I understand that fear so well. On one hand, I'm excited for all that freedom and independence, but the thought of getting older...ah, it's terrifying! I think that's why I love these photos so much - really reminds me of the joy and seemingly limitless boundaries of childhood. xx
I've seen Jason Lee's pictures, his daughters are so sweet and his pics are wonderfully crazy! A lot of time and effort taken to get those pics I bet! x
So sorry for the delay and thanks for your comment on my blog. My favorite brand is Alexander cqueen actually and when I found out about the gummy bear dress, I was really surprised. thanks and hope you stop by again!
Kids are super cute. But it's sad that everyone has to grow up and stop being cute sooner or later. I love Jason Lee's photos and Miranda Kerr, too! :D
Um, I have to admit. Working with kids for more than 10 years now, the adorable factor has slowly worn off. Haha. But yes, they do have their moments. ;)
Hahah, I have a little sister who's 8, so I can kind of understand. Sometimes, when she gets into one of her moods...but then when she's happy again and all smiley, I forget all about it. ^^ xx
comments are literary ice cream for me! I eat them up, so thank you so much for feeding me. :) { note: your comment will appear once moderated. thank you for your patience! }
haha kids are cute... WELL behaved kids are cute that is LOL. but ya I do agree, bigger eyes, more animated than adults is a def plus for cuteness!
ReplyDeleteOh lol, so true. Perhaps kids lose a little bit of cuteness when they're misbehaving like crazy. Though they gain it back so quickly. ^^
