I suffer from pretty intense cravings. Whenever they strike me ( and they usually involve ice cream ), my mind can think of nothing but getting a taste of that flavor-of-the-moment. Should I be unsuccessful in satisfying it in a timely manner, my mood darkens considerably. ...I think, when that time comes, pregnancy would turn me into a fiend.

| super healthy pizza. nom. photo. |
Sometime last week, I was hit by a massive craving for, you guessed it, pizza. I was powerless to fight against it, and honestly, I didn't want to, so I decided to try my hand at making one.
 |
| i love home-made pizza dough now. :) |
When I first came to the United States, way back when I was a little girl of 7 years-old, the first non-Asian cuisine I sampled was pizza. From the first bite, I was in love. Who knew that a simple combination of dough, tomato sauce, and cheese could taste so good?
Unfortunately, on the day that Mr. SB and I decided to make the pizza, my refrigerator was sorely lacking in ingredients...specifically pizza sauce. But we made do.
 |
| no need for tomato sauce. |
 |
| more veggies! |
Just to make things a little more flavorful, since we didn't have any pepperoni, sausage, or meats, we sautéed a variety of vegetables with salt and pepper. Oh, and garlic olive oil.
 |
| ready to go into the oven! |
I enjoy food too much to be able to name one dish my favorite, but pizza would definitely make the top 10. After all, it pretty much consists of the entire food pyramid ( how I rationalized pizza was undoubtedly healthy to my mother ) and the combinations are practically limitless.
First pizza = success. It definitely wasn't perfect, and I can already think of five ways to quickly improve upon it, but it was delicious all the same. Never underestimate the power of vegetables...and garlic olive oil. :)
Do tell what some of your favorite pizza topping combinations are! Till next time,
I've been craving chocolate lately (and indulging the craving, of course). And I'm always craving ice cream! :P Your homemade pizza looks delicious - homemade pizza over store-bought any day! Especially for the crust :)
ReplyDeleteHahah, thank you! And yes, I'm totally in the home-made boat now too. :)

ReplyDeleteYummy. I actually really like vegetarian pizza! Chicken pizza is also good. :D
Hahah, you should make one! It's so good, and the only time consuming part of it was waiting for the dough to rise. ^^

It all looks SO delicious!
ReplyDeleteIt was nommy! :D

wow xixia, amazing job!
ReplyDeleteNext time, try pre-baking the crust :) All those toppings piled on raw dough makes the bottom undercooked (I learned the hard way, too). I'd recommend trying dessert pizza next time - it's on my list of to-do's and would definitely satisfy your cravings for icecream and pizza at the same time! Tell mr. liu to eat more pizza - he's looking a little scrawny haha :)

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of pizza without tomato sauce, have you ever tried brushing on a bit of olive oil? So good!
Yes! I did brush on olive oil on the crust! Will have to try doing that on the main part of the pizza next time. :)

Hi sweety, thanks for your kind comment, Mygosh the post has worked up my appetite for pizza, its one of my favourite dishes too! I am mostly vegan so I only use vegetables when I make pizza. Your first attempt looks absolutely delicious! Hope you have a great week ahead!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sam! And ah, that's awesome! All of your pizzas must be so scrumptious - the veggies give it such a great flavor profile. :)

I wish I had the dedication to cook something! Specially if it was the food I was craving. You'd think I'd be more dedicated to make it since I'm craving it but nope... I just call my parents & ask them to bring my food home, hahahaha. The result looks so yummy! For some reason it reminds me of the costco pizza I tried! That was delicious too!
ReplyDeleteMy cravings were so intense - I had to make it. There really was no choice. ^^
DeleteBut hahah, I usually do that too! I beg and beg when they get really strong, though I only have about a 30% success rate. :D

Oooh yay - good for you! I made pizza this weekend for my parents. Arugula is definitely a must have for me as a topping. I threw some red onion on top and that was killer as well
ReplyDeleteMmm...arugula is so yummy! Hahah, for a long time a while back, I always thought arugula was a cheese. Imagine my surprise when I realized otherwise. XD
DeleteThat sounds like a killer combo. I'm gonna need to try that next time.

Your first paragraph touched me.... because that's exactly how I feel! D: My first "american" food was salad, so till this day it's one of my favorite food because the possibility is endless with salads, just like pizza! In fact, salad can be placed ONTOP of pizzas. I've watched this one cooking show where they did just that and I've always been very curious on how it would taste.
ReplyDeleteI think you did an amazing job making pizza... if it was me attempting to make pizza... I think my kitchen would be in a lot of trouble.
Oh wow, I kind of wish my first American food was salad - it was only recently that I actually started liking them. I avoided them like the plague when I was younger. ^^;
DeleteSalad on top of pizza now sounds so good! Lots of spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms...yumm I want some now.
Thanks for visiting my blog, Nyuu!

Heehee, I made one! I'm excited to get myself acquainted with it.
DeleteAnd ah so true. It'll be worth all that work just for the yummy dough. ^^
Thanks for visiting me as well! :)

ReplyDeleteYou definitely should, Stephanie! You can get super creative with toppings. ^^

Pizza is one of my most favourite foods too & something I love to make from scratch! I think I could eat it every single day & not get bored of it! Hah!
ReplyDeleteYour first attempt looks super yummy! I've never made one without sauce before, but now I'm curious, I may have to try this! I usually get a tin of chopped tomatoes & add lots of spices & herbs - then simmer it for around an hour to make it really thick & gloopy! You can mash the tomato chunks too if you don't like a chunky sauce. So yummy & it makes a great dip/pasta sauce also!
PS: Isn't garlic olive oil & home made pizza dough just the best thing ever?! :D
Um, yes. Yes it is. I now want to put garlic olive oil on everything. :)
DeleteYou should definitely try making a white pizza!! I find it lighter than the regular ones, and that way, you get a ton of flavor from the dough. And I dunno about you...but the dough is my favorite part. ^^
Ah, that is such a wonderful idea! I'm going to do that next time for sauce!
xx
That looks so good! I adore pizza, maybe I will try to make some for dinner tomorrow! My dad makes really good pizza!
ReplyDeleteAh that's awesome! You guys should make it together :)

Mmmm, love homemade pizza! I feel like it's so much healthier too, cause you can control exactly what is going on it!
ReplyDeleteFor sure. I felt like such a nutritional boss after eating it. Lots of veggies, little oil. It was wonderful.

aww I love pizzas too!! I hosted a dinner party recently where I made pizzas: http://cecylia.com/2012/08/but-friendship-is-the-breathing-rose-with-sweets-in-every-fold/
ReplyDeleteBut how did you make the base?
Ah that's awesome!! I wanna host a dinner party doing that. :)
DeleteMy dough? I just used all-purpose flour ( I wanna try to get bread flour next time ), yeast, water, salt, and olive oil. And cornmeal if you have any.
