Cravings : Pizza

August 11, 2012

photo.
I suffer from pretty intense cravings.  Whenever they strike me ( and they usually involve ice cream ), my mind can think of nothing but getting a taste of that flavor-of-the-moment.  Should I be unsuccessful in satisfying it in a timely manner, my mood darkens considerably.  ...I think, when that time comes, pregnancy would turn me into a fiend.
super healthy pizza. nom. photo.
Sometime last week, I was hit by a massive craving for, you guessed it, pizza.  I was powerless to fight against it, and honestly, I didn't want to, so I decided to try my hand at making one.
i love home-made pizza dough now. :)
When I first came to the United States, way back when I was a little girl of 7 years-old, the first non-Asian cuisine I sampled was pizza.  From the first bite, I was in love.  Who knew that a simple combination of dough, tomato sauce, and cheese could taste so good?

Unfortunately, on the day that Mr. SB and I decided to make the pizza, my refrigerator was sorely lacking in ingredients...specifically pizza sauce.  But we made do.
no need for tomato sauce.
more veggies!
Just to make things a little more flavorful, since we didn't have any pepperoni, sausage, or meats, we sautéed a variety of vegetables with salt and pepper.  Oh, and garlic olive oil.
ready to go into the oven!
I enjoy food too much to be able to name one dish my favorite, but pizza would definitely make the top 10.  After all, it pretty much consists of the entire food pyramid ( how I rationalized pizza was undoubtedly healthy to my mother ) and the combinations are practically limitless.

what i learned from this pizza-making session.
mozzarella, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, mushrooms.

First pizza = success.  It definitely wasn't perfect, and I can already think of five ways to quickly improve upon it, but it was delicious all the same.  Never underestimate the power of vegetables...and garlic olive oil. :)

Do tell what some of your favorite pizza topping combinations are!  Till next time,

  13. wow xixia, amazing job!

Next time, try pre-baking the crust :) All those toppings piled on raw dough makes the bottom undercooked (I learned the hard way, too). I'd recommend trying dessert pizza next time - it's on my list of to-do's and would definitely satisfy your cravings for icecream and pizza at the same time! Tell mr. liu to eat more pizza - he's looking a little scrawny haha :)

  32. Your first paragraph touched me.... because that's exactly how I feel! D: My first "american" food was salad, so till this day it's one of my favorite food because the possibility is endless with salads, just like pizza! In fact, salad can be placed ONTOP of pizzas. I've watched this one cooking show where they did just that and I've always been very curious on how it would taste.

I think you did an amazing job making pizza... if it was me attempting to make pizza... I think my kitchen would be in a lot of trouble.

    1. Oh wow, I kind of wish my first American food was salad - it was only recently that I actually started liking them. I avoided them like the plague when I was younger. ^^;

  48. Pizza is one of my most favourite foods too & something I love to make from scratch! I think I could eat it every single day & not get bored of it! Hah!
Your first attempt looks super yummy! I've never made one without sauce before, but now I'm curious, I may have to try this! I usually get a tin of chopped tomatoes & add lots of spices & herbs - then simmer it for around an hour to make it really thick & gloopy! You can mash the tomato chunks too if you don't like a chunky sauce. So yummy & it makes a great dip/pasta sauce also!

PS: Isn't garlic olive oil & home made pizza dough just the best thing ever?! :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Um, yes. Yes it is. I now want to put garlic olive oil on everything. :)
You should definitely try making a white pizza!! I find it lighter than the regular ones, and that way, you get a ton of flavor from the dough. And I dunno about you...but the dough is my favorite part. ^^
Ah, that is such a wonderful idea! I'm going to do that next time for sauce!
