Let the Memory Live Again.

August 31, 2012

Sometimes, I feel like my memory's storage capacity is almost full.
endless notes and memorization.
As a student, I oftentimes curse my mind and my memorization capabilities, especially when exams are near.  It seems that at one point, no matter how many times I read or write the same thing, it simply doesn't stick.  "Scumbag Brain," maybe?
if you zoom in, you'll see they're tiny umbrellas.
While the limits on the human brain cannot be concretely defined, a computer's memory is very much pre-determined.  Currently, I am working on a visualizer, and whenever I run it, all is well for one minute, then the error "E_OUTOFMEMORY" starts to terrorize me.

Whenever I feel ready to kick my computer out of frustration, I remind myself that it is a gateway to online shopping and pretty pictures, and my murderous mood disappears.  It is on one of my stress-relief browsing sessions I found this dreamy, vintage-esque series.

In an era where anyone with a phone can be considered a photographer ( Instagrams, anyone? ), I find myself almost inundated by beautiful pictures of people's lives.  All the photos I see daily practically merge with one another, making it difficult to distinguish one photographer's work from the other.  I can only remember so much.  But Kate Pulley's works have forever ingrained themselves in my mind.

Her Polaroids are beautifully dreamy and instill in me a deep sense of nostalgia.  These scenes should be ordinary; lying in the grass and feeding geese are practically mundane activities.  But when I look at her work, I feel transported into a magical new realm set within reality.  I wish myself into the pictures, and if I try hard enough, they become a part of my memory.
this is a ghostly realm.
Some estimate our brains can store one petabyte ( or one million gigabytes ) of information, while others claim up to 14 petabytes.  I think my mind's capacity doesn't even reach one gigabyte, considering how forgetful I am.  But at least some of that space is reserved for remembering Pulley's ethereal's photographs.

{ Pulley's work here. }

  1. Such dreamy photos! Ah I love your description of memory overload! I am so forgetful, I've lost my iphone twice when I was on my road trip! Not even close to a gb of memory... sigh.

    * but luckily the good people at the restaurants saved it for me at the front desk when I left without it.

  9. Technology– what a love/hate relationship, basically, haha. Theres's something so classic about polaroids and I'm glad they've been getting a second life recently (thanks Fuji film?) It gives you that instant quality from digital, but that natural presence from film. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your visualizer! xx

haha, brains can be total scumbags in the way that they don't like to remember what we need them to... but they do tend to remember pretty pictures and little moments that are important, like our earliest memories! :)

My memory is exactly the same, I'm so forgetful & yet random facts that will never come in handy for anything, ever, always seem to stick in my brain! Seriously, I'm perfect if you want a pub quiz team member, then my brain is like a secret weapon, but they have no use otherwise. I can never understand why it seems to make space for these useless facts & yet cannot remember important things like birthdays, passwords, appointments & arrangements... I'd be so lost without my diary!

  26. How beautiful are these imagery. I love the washed out colours paired with the mundane backdrops. It's true what you wrote, it really does transport one to another place. That last image is my favourite. So hauntingly beautiful. It's a shame that any fool with an iphone can use a filter and recreate something similar (myself included).

I really love these pictures for their dark undertones. I find most vintage photographers superficial, but these really speak.

Also~~ As a computer expert, I thought I'd ask your opinion because I'm about to buy a laptop. Do you recommend Macbook Air? I'm also not sure if I should get one with 4gb ram or 2gb. I've been an avid fangirl of the 11" version for a while

I think I do actually have quite a poor memory. and I hate having to study new, useless things because I feel like it is pushing out all the more important memories out. apparently there are things you can take to improve the memory, such as fish oil capsules? I've tried them before but they were so big and strong-smelling haha.
