I had a post planned for today. It was 90% written, the links were all corrected, labels inserted...but plans change.
Lupe Fiasco changes things. When I saw this "Bitch Bad" music video earlier today, it was all I wanted to talk about. It is supremely well-made, worth at least three re-watches.

unfortunately, the mv's quality is no better than 480p right now.
Yeah, now imagine a group of little girls nine through twelve,
On the internet watchin' videos, listenin' to songs by themselves.
It doesn't really matter if they have parental clearance;
They understand the internet better than their parents.
Now, being the internet, the content's probably uncensored -
They're young, so they're malleable and probably unmentored;
A complicated combination, maybe with no relevance,
Until that intelligence meets their favorite singer's preference.
"Bad bitches, bad bitches, bad bitches,
That's all I want and all I like in life is bad bitches, bad bitches."
Now let's say that they less concerned with him,
And more with the video girl acquiescent to his whims.
Ah, the plot thickens.
High heels, long hair, fat booty, slim,
Reality check, I'm not trippin'.
They don't see a paid actress, just what makes a bad bitch.

When she stood up and started dancing in the video, I felt a wave of déjà-vu wash over me. I used to be that little girl. Who hasn't done that in their youth? Granted, we probably weren't dancing to and singing along to words like "bad bitch," but that desire and goal to emulate remains the same.

screen capture from the music video: pound the alarm.
If you need a bad bitch,
Let me call a few.
Pumps on and them little mini skirts is out.
I see some good girls, Imma turn 'em out.
Okay bottle, sip, bottle, guzzle,
I'm a bad bitch, no muzzle, hey?
The message here is clear: she's a "bad bitch," and proud of it, since she parties harder and is more attractive than the goodie-two-shoes. Young girls all over the world listen to songs like this, as evidenced by Sophia-Grace and Rosie, and who knows how much value they place in those words? I mean no offense to Nicki Minaj - I was rapping along to "Super Bass" when it first came out, and I adored her collaboration with Rihanna for the song "Fly." But it's lyrics like those in "Pound the Alarm" that give me pause and wonder if there may be something wrong with our music industry.Let me call a few.

This song and music video is layered with thought and meaning, and I cannot hope to delve into it all and do it well. However, another striking imagery Lu introduces is blackface, by making the two main players in the video apply it toward the end. To me, he is insinuating that the people ( especially African-Americans) of the hip-hop and R&B industry are merely actors that play the role of what is expected of them. The men seem hyper-masculinized and uneducated; the women are loud and obnoxious. This makes me wonder: is Nicki Minaj in blackface in all her music videos? She is a beautiful woman with an incredible rapping talent, so are all those artificial additions and blatant sexualization of herself her mask?

there's nothing wrong with your browser. this album cover is literally all black. all black everything.
ps.
If you made it this far with the post, thank you for reading it. I hope this post hasn't offended you in any way, and I mean no slurs against the hip-hop industry as a whole. Rather, I question certain facets of it, just as I would any other industry.

Definitely an interesting post as I never really thought about the use of the word bitch in any other way as a not so nice way of referring to someone.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! And yes, that's exactly what I thought of...didn't think there'd be a positive meaning for that word.

Brilliantly reviewed hun! I am always analyzing the opo culture of today and find the similar result. I dislike the way the word is used so endearingly, when it is in fact not. If we can't respect ourselves and call ourselves 'bitches', how will we expect anyone else to treat us any better. I hadn't heard the song before but I must say those lyrics are potent and they make a valid statement about kids and the internet today. Its actually quite a scary thought! Really enjoyed your insight on this, I totally agree.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your sweet words, Sam!

I to try to refrain from swearing.
ReplyDeleteWords are thrown around a lot and now one word can have different interpretations. I always disliked how some music and songs, and even media have to depict something derogatory or oppressive. It is good to hear songs like this, hopefully more people will listen as well!
Yes, Lupe is my king. I can't think of another rapper as brilliant as him. XD

Great post Xixia and that's a good question that you pose at the end. To an extent, I feel almost everyone feels some slight pressure to play into the role that's expected of them. And you're right, treating it almost like acting. Interesting examination of the word
ReplyDeleteAh, Rooth, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it.

wow. I LOVE THIS. soo interesting and i love your analyzing of his lyrics! so thoughtful. i've definitely heard of him, but i haven't ever really listened to him...but i'll be listening to this for sure! also, i did think something was wrong with my browser while looking at his album cover...haha. thanks for your sweet comment on my blog!! i actually didn't take the pictures, but just rounded them up. oh, and the chuck i was talking about was actually chuck bass from gossip girl. I'M IN LOVE WITH HIM. i haven't ever watched the show chuck, though! i'm excited to keep reading along and maybe we can comment on pop culture together!! p.s. so interesting about lupe's blackface meaning and nicki minaj...i agree with you!
ReplyDeleteRachel, thanks so much for visiting!! We should def do that - it'd be so much fun. :)
DeleteAnd ahahhh I see...Chuck Bass has got that sexy smolder down. :P

Very interesting post! I hate words like that, I find them demeaning and I don't think people should refer to each as that term.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Francesca!

I really did think there was something wrong with my browser after seeing those big black squares but it's some interesting issues you raise. I think it's easy for "celebrities" to get sucked into stereotypes, sing about the same kind of subject matter and so it's really refreshing when you come across someone who breaks the mould and does their own thing.
ReplyDeleteWinnie, thanks so much for reading!
DeleteAnd for sure. I often wonder just how much of what the celebrity portrays is who he is vs. what he's trying to sell. It's so hard to differentiate between the two.

Cool one!!! can;t wait to read more!!! xxx

I'm a huge fan of Lupe, so I'm really glad you posted this! It's a great song too. I'm adore hiphop, but cannot stand rap, especially the more modern kind & I think some of the things you hit on here are probably the main reason I dislike it. It has all become too similar, to generic & the lyrics are just meaningless. The exact opposite of what initially made me fall in love with it. I love that there are still a few artists like Lupe around, I'd definitely class him as more hiphop though, it's nice to have some fresh stuff instead of just listening over & over to my old 80s & 90s favourites! I'm also a big fan of Hyro Da Hero at the moment, he's sort of a blend between hiphop & heavy metal, so if you're into that kind of thing, definitely give him a listen! :)
ReplyDeleteOh you're a fan of Lupe?! That's so awesome! I love finding fellow Lupe fans. :) :)
DeleteWith rap, there's a few artists I really love ( like Lupe and B.o.B ), whereas I can't stand the work of others, so I can definitely see where you're coming from. Some of Lil Wayne's songs just make me want to gag.
And hmm, I've never heard of Hyro Da Hero, but I'm going to check him out ASAP!!

i actually read this post on my ipad a few days ago and didn't comment. this is a really great point and i feel like it could be an article in a newspaper. you know the line in nicki minajs song starships where she uses twinkle twinkle little star? my husband was like 'kid are going to google that and that is going to pop up now'. i hadn't heard of this guy before and now i'm really interested, he's a very cool artist and i love how socially aware his stuff is.

Thanks for commenting, Katherine! ( and aren't iPads awesome? XD )
DeleteAnd oh gosh, yes I do! Though I didn't quite comprehend that meaning until just now. Dang. Sometimes, she really needs to tone down her lyrics, considering how many little girls listen to her. I'd love it if she could just sing more songs like "Fly."
xx
Isn't it sad that this is the state we are living in now. I've never heard of Lupe but am definitely interested. Pop culture, specifically pop music has never really appealed to me. Below the catchy tunes there really isn't much else there. I love you for writing this. This desensitising of once controversial topics had been going on for far too long. We need more celebrities that champion modesty and restraint. I hate to think what my little girls are going to grow up watching.

Thank you for your insightful comment! I feel very much the same way, though I have no daughters, I do have a little sister who's growing up with these messages thrown at her.
