This year, however, I'm going to do it a bit differently. Rather than just keep a short list of the biggest films that will come out this year, I'm going to, at the start of each month, look at the releases and compile a list of films that spark my interest (and hopefully yours too!). So without further ado (hover over images):
january
gangster squad
release date: january 11th, 2013.
starring: ryan gosling, emma stone, sean penn, & josh brolin.
director: ruben fleischer.
storyline: Los Angeles, 1949: A secret crew of police officers led by two determined sergeants work together in an effort to take down the ruthless mob king Mickey Cohen who runs the city (from imdb).
it's a no-brainer why i'm so pumped to see this movie. this cast is filled to the brim with charisma and talent. just having ryan gosling would be enough for me, but him, josh brolin, and sean penn? they could all just be on the screen, eating macaroni 'n cheese, and i'd be satisfied. the fact this film is set in the times of old hollywood glamour just makes me want to swoon. plus, emma stone is too adorable and perfect for words (yes, this is me, shamelessly fangirl-ing).
why watch it: amazing cast + film noir style.

zero dark thirty
release date: january 11th, 2013.
starring: jessica chastain, joel edgerton, & chris pratt.
director: kathryn bigelow.
storyline: A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May, 2011 (from imdb).
like a lot of people, i think the only reason why this movie is on my radar is because it was directed by kathryn bigelow, the only woman to ever win an oscar for best director. so yay, girl power. films like this are usually a bit too serious for my liking, but i found hurt locker enjoyable (especially, with its moments of levity), so i have my hopes high for this one as well.
why watch it: directed by the wonderful kathryn bigelow. oh, and chris pratt stars.

struck by lightning
release date: january 11th, 2013 (limited).
starring: chris colfer & rebel wilson.
director: brian dannelly.
storyline: After being struck and killed by lightning, a young man recounts the way he blackmailed his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine (from imdb).
glee fans would probably love this movie for chris colfer (who plays kurt in the show), but for me, i'm there for rebel wilson. she's a comedienne who is rapidly gaining more attention and fame for her roles in bridesmaids and more recently pitch perfect (go see it if you haven't already. it's seriously pure delight, in movie form).
why watch it: rebel wilson ♥. 'nuff said.

movie 43
release date: january 25th, 2013.
starring: emma stone, stephen merchant, richard gere, hugh jackman, & more.
director: assortment.
storyline: A series of interconnected short films follows three kids as they search the depths of the Internet to find the most banned movie in the world (from imdb).
this film feels like a straight-up comedy imitation almost of love actually. but then again, any film with a star-studded ensemble cast, where it is described as many interconnected stories, makes me think of love actually. anyways, while i'm not the most interested in the storyline, i do love films where i can just see some of my favorite actors and actresses interact on one screen, and this one has so many i adore. emma stone, hugh jackman, elizabeth banks, chris pratt, and the list goes on~
why watch it: just look at that cast list.

Please let me know if there are any other January movies worth noting that I missed! I want to make these posts useful not just for me, but for you as well. In fact, mainly useful for you. :)
p.s.
the hover effect over the movie posters will not work on mobile devices. i'm modifying it so that the text will show up on the side.

Oh! I like the hover effect! :D
ReplyDeleteSadly, not my cup of movies this time, perhaps next time? :3
Thankies! and oh no ;n; hahah, hopefully next time! What kinds of movies do you usually like? x
DeleteIt varies! The last one I watched was Catfish, a docu film, I also seen Up and a whole lot more of Pixar, Studio Ghibli is great too.... Face/Off, Harry Potter, Salt, Wanted, XXX (with Vin Diesel), the Pacifier.... Watch a lot of Asian films too,Ehm... I guess you could say I like a lot XD
DeleteI am no fan of love stories and or comedies, nor overly promoted films, I kind of start to lose interest when they do it!
I think these movie lists each month is a good idea! So far, Gangster Squad is the only one I want to watch for January. There's also a Hansel and Gretel movie coming out. I like it when fairy tales are done in a different way, but the trailers for it don't look that great =/
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! They all look so good, I want to watch them all!
ReplyDeleteCarmen Ri.
Oooo, I love hoover effect! That's really impressive! I wanted to watch Struck By Lightening, but I just remembered vaguely seeing a trailer. I didn't realize that it was out!
ReplyDeleteWow - I just realized how incredibly late I am in watching movies. The Avengers is next on my Netflix que! I love how you did the hover over image effect!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I like that Josh Brolin is getting more parts, I think I'm starting to get confused with all the movies that pair up Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
ReplyDeleteHi dear, we usually only get these movies over 5-6 months after its released overseas, thanks for letting me know what to look out for in future!
ReplyDeleteOHHH love this! i totally want to see gangster squad too because i love emma stone hehehe :p
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to Gangster Squad & Zero Dark Thirty too! This is such a good idea & I also love the hover effect on the images! I'm really looking forward to catching Django Unchained & Lincoln too when they're out over here.
ReplyDeletePS: Love the new layout! And I just realized I missed so many of your posts over the last few months, I'm not sure how that happened but I'm going to catch up with all of them now! :)
That hovering text is SO cool, very nice touch :) And I love Emma Stone and think it's so wonderful she's getting into more elaborate and serious films. I feel like a proud mom watching her haha. And ahhh Kurt from Glee! That's so cool he's in movies now, too!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for your kind words on by blog :) That's awesome a lot of your friends went to India! I'm going from south all the way north, and then crossing into Nepal. Do you remember any of their favorite cities?
Wow, it's been a while since I last popped by and look how much has changed! I love love love your blog makeover and that hovering text is the best thing ever! How on earth did you make that? Off to catch up on all the great posts I've missed these last months. Hope your new year is off to a great start.

I love anything with Emma Stone in it hehe :P
ReplyDeleteI need to watch Gangster Squad. I love Ryan Gosling.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...these movies are not on my radar yet. I still need to watch Argo and Lincoln. But what I really want to see is French movie "Amour". It's nominated for the Oscars and I've heard a lot of good things about it from friends.
ReplyDeleteLoving the new layout of your blog, sweetheart! It's absolutely gorgeous.

Gangster Squad. Ryan. That's all I need as a reason. Rebel, so precious. Plus she's an aussie so I'm super proud of her.
ReplyDeleteNice idea, I like how you have made this post. I haven't seen any of these movies before, but if it has Ryan Gosling... I'm so down!
ReplyDeleteOh oh oh oh, to add to the list of movies to watch this year, I would totally check out Pacific Rim (directed by Guilmmero del Toro...ahh can't spell his name!). It should be coming out later this year and the trailers look insanely cool and exciting. :D
ReplyDeleteahh it's Chris Colfer from Glee! didn't know he had a movie coming out. thanks for all these suggestions! :)
ReplyDeleteMetallic Paws- New giveaway up on my blog!
I only watched the first movie and it was OK. I am really interested in the last two movies though.
