Beginning of Spring.

March 16, 2013

Finally. It feels like spring. The mentally and physically exhausting week of midterms is over, and I could not be more grateful. Thank goodness it only lasts for a week - I don't think my I could handle any more days of barely sleeping, hahah.

banchan (반찬). sautéed mushrooms, kimchi, & spicy cucumbers.
In celebration of finishing with all of our exams, my friends and I made the short trek over to a local Korean and Japanese restaurant: Nassau Sushi. Sharing a meal with close friends is one of those simple pleasures in life that never gets old.

bibimbap (비빔밥).
all mixed up!
Bibimbap is staple of Korean cuisine and is simply rice topped with a variety of vegetables and chili pepper paste. The word itself literally means "mixed rice." Two of my friends ordered the dolsot bibimbap (돌솥 비빔밥), which is bibimbap served in a hot stone bowl. It's my favorite preparation of the dish: the hot bowl crisps up the edges of the rice and cooks the nearly-raw egg that frequently tops the vegetables.

jjamppong (짬뽕).
Someone else ordered the jjamppong, which is spicy seafood noodle soup. We all "ooh"ed and "ahh"ed when the waiter brought out the dish. Doesn't the bowl look like a pearl?

soon doo boo (순두부찌개).
I ended up trying something new: the seafood soon doo boo, which is a spicy stew with plenty of tofu (yummm), scallions, shrimp, and clams. Due to my impatience, I ended up burning my tongue from the delicious chili soup. But oh my goodness, it was worth it.

How has everyone been this March? Does it feel like spring yet for you?

  6. I'm glad your midterms are over now! All of that food looks delicious. I love getting Korean food, though I typically get bulgogi. When it comes to bibimbap, I also like the dolsot version. I love how the rice gets crispy in it!

It's actually pretty warm where I am right now, so it definitely feels like spring. I'm already wearing T-shirts again!

  7. gosh I love korean side dishes (especially how some restaurants give unlimited refils!) anyway, I wish bibimbap didn't have raw egg :(
